Is It Time To Replace Your Brushes?
When is the last time you replaced your makeup brushes? Like all of them? Experts say about every 3 months you should swap them out for new ones, but I hold off for about 6. The only reason I am able to get away with it is because out of the million brushes I have I only use about 4 regularly, and of course my beauty blender. I also wash my brushes every other week. My go-to brands for brushes are Bobbi Brown, Elf Cosmetics, Morphe & Sonia Kashuk (via Target).
I usually toss my brushes is when they begin to shed. Bobbi Brown brushes shed pretty bad, and so do the Sonia Kashuk brushes. Because the Elf brushes are so affordable, I toss them at random. My Morphe brushes are in the same price range as Elf, but it's something about those brushes that I really love. I feel as if the results are better once I do my makeup, after they have been used a few times. So I get to the point where I don’t want to replace those as much, but I know I need to.
Another indicator to toss them is after you wash them, if they don’t return to there original shape. Also after you wash them, lay them flat on a towel so that the water doesn’t run down to where the brush and the handle meet so the glue that keeps them together doesn’t wither as well. That will also help prolong your brush life.
Now lets get into cleaning! I use two brush cleansers. The first is the Conditioning Brush Cleanser from Bobbi Brown. I like this cleanser because as y’all know, I have sensitive skin and the formula is gentle so I don’t break out from it. Not to mention it lasts pretty long and it retails at $17.
The other is the Clinique Makeup Brush Cleanser. I started using this cleanser simply for the fact that I use the makeup remover, so why not try this as well. The makeup remover works so well on my skin I thought surely this would work equally as well, and it does! This retails for $18.50.
When it comes to cleaning my beauty blender, I keep it super simple. Don’t laugh, but I use my dish soap, preferably Dawn. I get a bowl of warm water put some soap in it and just squeeze it and let the blender absorb the soapy water and squeeze it out, and I keep doing it until the water is clear. Then I rinse it with warm water to make sure I get all the soap out of it.
So now that you know how I clean my brushes and when/why I toss them. I hope you have a little more clarity on when to either clean or replace your makeup brushes. As always see you next time!
