Keeping Up With Color

A lot of people reach out to me about my hair color, and all the maintenance that comes with it. I will say that it can be a lot at times because I travel to get my hair done. My stylist and I haven’t lived in the same place in years, but we make it work. When I lived in Arizona I was getting my hair colored twice a year (thank God dark roots used to be a thing). When I was in Atlanta my stylist ended up moving to Vegas (just my luck right!) but every 3 months we would meet in Ohio. Now that I'm in Cali I can get to her whenever.

I got a few questions on IG so I figured I would do a brief Q&A, and then in October I will follow up with a video on all of it!

When did you start coloring your hair? I started getting highlights spring break my junior year of high school, yes… its been ages! As I kept getting highlights I gradually became a full blown blonde. I've also colored my hair red, brown, and black.

Has your hair ever broken off? Yes! The second time I dyed my hair red I had gone to Panama for spring break, and I bought a new shampoo that had Keratin in it (another story in itself!) and that shampoo mixed with the salt water dried my hair out so bad that it started breaking off. I was devastated!

Why don’t you find a local stylist? I've tried trust me, but 2 things usually go wrong. For example, in Arizona  the lady tried to bleach my hair and I told her no. Long story short she ended my coloring my hair an ugly yellowish looking color #hatedit. In Atlanta I had a platinum blonde ring around my head and I was mortified, and my stylist had to correct it.  So after those experiences I realized that my stylist is my #perfectmatch. She's been coloring my hair for over a decade and I’m not switching up. My hair is healthy, and growing like crazy so it’s a forever thing!

What would you say to somebody that wants color but never had it? Honestly, the best advice I can give someone is to just ease your way into it. Start with a little and as you learn how to take care of your color and nourish your hair then add more. Or go try on a few wigs so you can get an idea of what you will look like with that color.

How often do you get color and what do you do in between appointments? I was getting color every 3 months, but now I’m every other month. In between appointments I do weekly hot oil treatments, and then steam my hair for about an hour. I also do this the day before the appointment. And I use this amazing shampoo called, “Fanola No Yellow Shampoo and Nutri Care Conditioner” (got it on Amazon). It's a purple shampoo that keeps your color vibrant and prevents it from fading (small disclaimer: it will turn your hands purple).

Do you bleach your hair? No Ma'am! We stay away from bleach. My hair takes color very well. Sometimes it lifts quickly other times it takes a while, but no bleach especially because we only color my roots.  No need in taking the chance in possibly damaging my hair.

All in all, it can be a lot sometimes with maintaining my color, but I love getting my hair done especially since I don’t go that often. Its honestly another form of therapy for me and I love getting my hair professionally washed! Like I said earlier in the post, I will circle back with a color care update with a fun video on the whole process!

As always, see you next week! Paige
