What Is The Vision You Have For Your Life?
For the past few months I have been trying to figure out my purpose. I have read so many blogs, books and have listened to countless sermons trying to figure out how to find mine. After typing this blog post countless times, a question popped into my mind. What is the vision for your life? We all have things we like to do that bring us joy, but what else is there. What do we want to be remembered for? What impact do we want to have? How can I use my talents or hobbies to reach others? The answer to that is your vision and ultimately that is you purpose.
By definition a goal is “what one intends to accomplish or attain". It seems we always have these answers memorized in our brains when a potential employer asks, "Where do you see yourself in five years?" while at an interview or when you're on a date and you're asked, "What are your short term goals?". Some of our answers are based off wanting a positive reaction from the person who asked. Do you find yourself making goals based off getting validity from others?
Are your goals to just become debt free, get a promotion at work and live comfortably? That's great and all but that's not good enough. In everything we do we should be giving it our all, at all times. We're supposed to pay off debt. Our work ethic should be so great that promotions are attainable. We should be able to live comfortably. Think bigger.
This is where the vision comes in. By definition a vision is, "an act or power of seeing" or "thought, concept, or object formed by the imagination". The Bible says, without a vision, people perish.
Sometimes we have to get creative and use our imaginations to create a reality we could only dream of. Something impactful. That should be the vision for your life! Goals are great. We need them to make personal strides in life but in setting them, they essentially need to be aligned with the vision we have for our lives. They go hand in hand. If you don’t have a vision for your life, what are your goals for? Corbett Barr said it best, "Your life's vision defines who you want to be, and what you want to be known for."
You may have a vision for your life and you are doing everything in your power to make it come to fruition and it just isn't happening. Maybe it's time to rethink it and align your goals to achieve it. In life we want to be happy and live it to the fullest, but we should also be helping others along the way. You ever hear preachers say that somebody’s breakthrough is linked to your testimony? You have all these talents downloaded into you that somebody needs to help them. So you owe it to yourself and somebody else to create that vision and go after it.
With all that being said, I have some re-evaluating to do! Hopefully this provides a little clarity to some of you that may feel a little lost. It definitely helped me.
